St. John’s Dance, composed by Jonathan David, is a programmatic work for saxophone and piano. It was inspired by a Medieval phenomenon in which peasants would dance uncontrollably; people at the time thought it was because of a religious experience, although modern historians think it may have been a psychotropic reaction to a fungus that was growing on European grain in the Middle Ages. The work makes several references to contemporary rock and dance music, as it alternates between subdued and energetic sections. This performance took place during a guest artist recital at Queens College in Long Island.
